Resources to Empower
We aim to offer any resources and an atmosphere that is empowering, culturally relevant, trauma informed and survivor driven. We like to allow the survivor to lead and we will bring the expertise and support needed.
Empowering a survivor increases their power in a personal, interpersonal and social arena. Below are four avenues that can assist a survivor in taking those first steps required to take their lives back.
Shelters: Users report feeling safer, more hopeful and possessing more safety strategies as a result of their shelter stay. Find a shelter near you.
Advocacy: Leads to survivors experiencing less violence over time, less difficulty accessing community resources as well as increasing social support and promoting a higher quality of life. Check out Virginia’s Alliance for Sexual and Domestic Violence.
Support Groups: Support groups have led to survivors feeling a greater sense of belonging and higher self esteem while experiencing less distress. View a listing of Virginia support groups available.
Counseling: Counseling has led survivors to decrease depression, anxiety and PTSD symptoms, while also helping survivors feel better about their lives. Find local counseling agencies in Virginia.
If you are being abused, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3244 or visit www.thehotline.org.
